Is there a way to make gimp use freetype219 instead of freetype2?
Can freetype219 be somehow substituted for freetype2?
Otool displays this message about libfreetype for Gimp 2.2:
(compatibility version 6.3.0, current version 6.3.0)
Why isn't a higher version of freetype listed by Fink as a requirement for
Gimp 2.2?

As far as I can tell, gimp2 doesn't require any external freetype2 package whatsoever--so the issue must be with that version which resides within your X11 installation--installing a new fink freetype2 won't make any difference.
The reason not to have packages depend on an external freetype2 was to prevent confusion in the build process due to the presence of the built-in freetype stuff from X11. On the other hand this doesn't seem to be working as well anymore.
Does "fink install xorg xorg-shlibs" not remove xfree86 and xfree86-shlibs automatically?
