Bear in mind that these are representative, not comprehensive, download failure messages. The files were actually present, so I downloaded them manually but I also changed fink.conf DownloadMethod to be rsync (from axel--which had been working fine). I don't know whether the download method caused my problems, so I guess I'll have to do a little testing in that regard (unless someone already knows what's up).
Downloading aside, this package did build and install without any difficulties:
i hmmer 2.2g-3
--so this is positive feedback. (maintainer cc'd)
