That's not true. Like Alexander said, if you install foo-1.3-4 from unstable/source, and then later add 1.2-5 from binary, what you will be running is 1.2. ONLY if foo-1.4 is added to unstable and you then choose to do an update-all will foo-1.4 unstable/source be running on your system.
That's what i ment, went I said, I can't get rid of it. There's no chance to tell fink not to use or not to update a package from source any more.
Yes there is. Remove unstable from fink.conf and then never use fink (the file in /sw/bin/fink) but only use apt-get to get new packages. /sw/bin/fink is (generally) for getting packages from source, and apt-get is for binary packages.
If you don't update to foo-1.4, then you'll happily keep using foo-1.2 (from binary). If at a later time foo-1.3 becomes available in binary format, then updating using stable/binary WILL switch you from foo-1.2 to foo-1.3. But that's only if you update. Nothing forces you to update either to a new binary or to a newer source.
Well, I was used to run "update-all" to get current versions uf everything. If I wanted to avoid a single package to be updated I couldn't use update-all any more. I were forced to update every single package "manually". That is not comfortable and that is not what I expect to be a "package manager".
Then you want to use Fink Commander when you can easily select multiple packages at once without having type all their names out.
