By not working I mean't that the xmms loads up and looks like it
operates but there is no sound. I have looked for the output plugin
option to select esound but that plugin is not available. Maybe I am
not installing by source correctly. Last time I removed xmms and tried
to install it from fink by source, it said that I need to install 5
packages, one of which is xfree86. From what I have read I shouldn't
need to install it since I am running 10.3.8 with x11.

What do you mean, 'didn't work'? Do you mean that it didn't install,
or that you still don't have the esound plugin?
The version in the binary distribution is known to lack the esound
plugin, and people who have installed xmms from source have reported
that this indeed generated it.
I tried that root thing by killing esound and re-running it, didn;t
work either. I have tried running it in standard x11 and icewm, kde
and gnome none have worked.
The only sound I have ever heard when running in x11 mode is the KDE
sound test and xdigger.
Also on a side note why does my password for "su" not work when
trying to do stuff while "sudo" my password works fine?
'su' normally wants you to give root's password, while for 'sudo'
you're empowered to use your own password to do stuff as root.
