The CVS selfupdate reported that it had been successful, but I was still getting the initial CVS routine when I tried again. Anyway, it seemed to me that my best bet for getting back on track might be to to restore the /sw/fink folder from a backup made just prior to changing the /sw/etc/apt/sources.list, which I did at your suggestion to avoid 403 errors. I did so, and the 403 errors have now stopped for whatever reason, so the problem appears solved. I think it's likely that I edited the sources.list file improperly. Anyway, thanks for your help.
