Same machine, fast connection at the coffee shop, so I don't need to
copy them to a different box.

Disregard my prior post--you shouldn't even have 3.4.1-21 at all if you're on Panther.  Check /sw/etc/apt/sources.list and make sure you don't have any unofficial .deb repositories in it--you're looking at Tiger binaries here which could cause havoc on your system.
