I may have to elaborate further to let people know that looking back, I cannot vouch that it was the short tutorial in iCreate that helped me or not, since I've done so many random things I lost track. I think what helped was to type the following line, which I believe is some kind of script

    . /sw/bin/init.sh

The short tutorial in iCreate was for Panther and an earlier version of Fink, so I had to be a little creative to make it work for Mac OS 10.4.2 and Fink 0.8.0.

I still cannot get the Xwindow environment to start up, although I was able to install and run a few simple X11 packages. I did find a potentially useful website in the form of

. However, I don't know what this XDarwin thing is. Could someone tell me where to find this application? Many thanks.

Hmm, this sounds possibly related to my question last week here which went unanswered (I am unable to get x11 going with fink on my brand-new Mac mini with Tiger).

If anyone (Daisuke?) could share the fink+Apple X11 first-time setup process for OS 10.4+ that might be very helpful. The Darwin+X11 FAQ, as I mentioned before, seems to not match the behavior and files one finds on a brand-new factory-installed 10.4 system. If Daisuke found better info in a magazine, maybe the FAQ needs updating?

Thanks.

Thank you all again for your help. I've somehow got Fink to work in Apple X11 through a short tutorial given in issue 16 of iCreate Magazine, pages 070 ~ 071.
