A further thought regarding my previous post. I booted from my backup drive on which I have a fink installed KDE 3.3.2 and Evolution 1.4 that work. Kontact crashes but KMail and Kaddressbook work. My KDE3.4 on my regular drive has a functioning Kontact but crashing KMail (on new message) and non-starting kaddressbook. Is there a way to copy over KDE3.3.2 packages onto my hard drive for KMail and Kaddressbook and eliminate the bad KDE3.4 packages so that I can use KDE3.4 yet run the earlier functioning versions of Kmail and Kaddressbook from the Kontact3.4 version? Or without Kontact for that matter-just stand alone? How about copying over the necessary Evolution stuff to get that working again? My goal is to have an info suite that has email, contacts and calendar and while Evolution works I'd prefer the KDE Kontact suite. Either way I'd like to have something that works.
Thanks,
Brian

I'm pretty sure you can't mix KDE3.2 and KDE3.4. You _could_ remove all of KDE3.4 and try to set your firewire drive up as a deb source--and thereby install the KDE3.2 packages in the "correct" way (assuming that you saved the .deb files).

The problem with just copying willy-nilly (i.e. copying files directly) is that you can have a setup that seems OK to the dependency engine, but which has versions of libraries that are completely incompatible with what Fink thinks are installed--resulting in hard-to-debug build or runtime failures.
