I just had this problem. I ran the Disk Utility and repaired
permissions ... problem solved.

When trying to install Fink 7.2 on a powerbook with OS X 10.3 I have
the following problem:
When the installer package promplts me to select a hard disk volume
on which to install fink, I select the Macintosh HD (which is the
only option), the installer then gives me an error saying it cannot
use the main drive because the drive does not support symbolic links.
Is there anyway to get past this problem?
The Fink FAQ <http://fink.sf.net/faq> item entitled 'I can't install
Fink via the Installer package, because I get "volume doesn't support
symlinks" errors.' sounds like it might have more information.
