Greetings,

I'm trying to install Vnc, which appears to be the krdc package (for KDE anyway), and after a long compile, etc. process, the procedure ends with these messages:

X11 provided with Panther.

You have an existing X11 installation in /usr/X11R6 and/or /etc/X11.
This package refuses to overwrite these. Remove them, then tell Fink to
install xfree86 again. (The package won't be recompiled.) If you want
to keep your X11 installation, install system-xfree86 resp. system-xtools
instead to make this known to Fink's package system.

---------------

Looks as though it doesn't want to trash the existing X11 installation. Assuming I want to keep my X11 installation, I am directed to install "system-xfree86 resp. system-xtools". Now what does that mean?

This is a bad time to use an abbreviation, if that's what the "resp." is. I'm not sure how to proceed.

(respectively)

I keep telling the maintainer this--this text is obsolete in any case.

Here's some output from "fink list" :
[Rodan:~] fhuddles% fink list -i system-xfree86
Information about 2224 packages read in 4 seconds.
 i   system-xfree86         2:4.3-2           [placeholder for user installed x11]
i   system-xfree86-dev     2:4.3-2           [placeholder for user installed x11 development tools]
i   system-xfree86-shlibs  2:4.3-2           [placeholder for user installed x11 shared libraries]
[Rodan:~] fhuddles%

So can someone  tell me how to proceed? Should I follow the directions in the FAQ 7.2?

No.  FAQ 9.11.

Install something else?
Thanks...

Frank Huddleston

Check to see whether you have x11, x11-shlibs, and x11-dev virtual packages, too.  I believe it's possible to have the system-xfree86 virtuals but not these, but I'm not completely sure.
