I tried to install the virtual package x11.

Failed: no version info available for x11
That's why it is called "virtual"; you cannot install it directly. It
shows up as installed automatically once you have a complete X11
installation. This can be either Apple's X11 or one of Fink's packages
xfree86 or xorg. there are a couple of FAQ entries trying to explain
this, too. You may have it installed already, try
fink list x11
If it has a "p" in front of x11, it means it is "provided", and you
should be fine.
When I type "fink -V x11" I get version info. Please advise!
You get version info for fink the package manager and Fink the
distribution, but not for x11, right?
Also, I get many errors when I try to run an installed package
concerning the display.
For example, I installed xpilot just to test some things out.
It installed sucessfully. Then I run it, it pauses for a second,
gives me some version info, and get the following error:
xpilot: Can't open display ':0.0': (No such file or directory)
Does it really say "No such file or directory"? That's weird. Otherwise
this sounds like you don't have X11 running. Read FAQ#8.6 "When I try to
run an application, I get a message that says "cannot open display: What
do I need to do?"
I get very similar display error outputs for many other packages.
Not surprising, they all want a running X11 to connect to. Those
computers are stubborn ;-)
