Just to update you on the installation problem for emacs21:

Before trying the last suggestion, I did an update for several packages from Apple that needed restart the machine. Well, after restarting I could
remove the emacsen-common package from the terminal and installed
emacs21 using FinkCommander without a glitch!!!
It's running but .... (I know, nothing is perfect!), when I opened a .tex file
and tried to latex it, I received the message: latex command not found.
And I do have installed teTex with Fink...
Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks once again for your help and time!
nancy

ps: regarding the problem with emacsen-common, I guess I'm still as
ignorant of the causes as I was these past couple of days...

Hello again:

Thanks Alexander for your suggestions, unfortunately they did not work.
I reinstall Tiger and reinstall Fink this morning. Later I used
FinkCommander
to install emacsen-common first and did not work. This is the message I
received:

The following NEW packages will be installed:

Then I followed the suggestion of removing the package using:

sudo dpkg --remove --force-all emacsen-common

and this is the error message I've got:

Any ideas of what is going on????
Thanks a lot for any help! (and also for your time!)
Best,
nancy

Oops--thought "force-all" would work.

Check this thread out:

http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.beginners/4188

Basically what I told the original poster to do was manually create
/sw/var/lib/emacsen-common/installed-flavors via "sudo touch
/sw/var/lib/emacsen-common/installed-flavors".

Try doing that and then run "sudo dpkg --configure emacsen-common"

I don't recally exactly why this happens, though.
