Alexander:
Your suggestion to remove 'localhost' and set DISPLAY to :0.0 did the
trick. All is well again.
The solution raises questions. First, I am certain that, before
changing window managers, setting DISPLAY to localhost:0.0 worked
fine, even when using Apple's X11.app. So what did changing window
managers trigger? And why does Apple's X11 trip over localhost:0.0
when XDarwin.app does not?
At least I'm up and running again.
Thanks.

Echo $DISPLAY returns localhost:0.0 from my shell running from
Terminal.app. From the xterm I run from Apple's X11 (via the
Applications pull-down menu) it returns :0.0. From what I
understand
that is effectively the same thing.
DISPLAY is set to localhost.0.0 from my .cshrc file.
So much for brilliant ideas. ;-)
Try setting DISPLAY in your .cshrc to just ":0.0" (get rid of
"localhost") and see if that helps.
And as an addendum, I tried the following experiment:
setting DISPLAY to "localhost:0" works for XDarwin.app. On the other
hand, for X11.app, using "localhost:0" does not, while just using ":0"
does.
