I'm inclined to agree with you on that. I've had issues in which Apple's Installer seemingly forgot what it was doing in the middle of installing the Fink binary package. You might want to try flushing out your old installation via running sudo rm -rf /sw in a terminal window, and then try using the installer package again. -- Alexander K.
