Is /sw

It's not _supposed_ to be used by anything else (that's one reason
Fink uses it). However, there have been instances where (being blunt)
lazy developers decided to use Fink-compiled stuff directly and put it
in /sw.

If you poke around in your /sw directory with the Finder you should be
able to see what's there. Nothing required by your system uses it so
you can delete the directory to do a clean install of Fink.

However, since you said "assuming a successful install", does this
mean you ran the installer? You may just need to do something as
simple as open a fresh terminal window for the "fink" command to show
up.
