I've just installed fink. Running fink selfupdate I get

gcc_select gives
$ sudo gcc_select
Current default compiler:
gcc version 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5247)
but then
$ sudo gcc_select 4.0
Error trying to determine current cc version (got gcc version 4.0.1
(Apple Computer, Inc. build 5247))
I've tried clean installing XCode 2.2, and I get the same problem.
Am I doing anything obviously wrong? I get the same issue with, for
example fink install python24
