I recently installed gnome. I was a little disappointed in the install. Normally fink seems to cover all the setup pretty adroitly, but this time it failed to setup the recommended gdm user and group. It took me awhile to determine that problem and get it straightened out. There is still some problem that I haven't resolved that I think is a permissions error, but I'm having trouble nailing to down enough to even elucidate it.
In any case, I have an automation to do a fink selfupdate regularly and mail me the results. Another automation checks for outdated components and emails me the list. When I see that an update needs to be performed, I perform it. So this morning I did an "update-all" after a selfupdate on two of my machines. It was successful on one machine, but the other (the one on which I recently installed gnome, and which had more updates to install) failed during the installation. The failure prescribes a possible solution (see below), which I've tried twice with no better results. So I'm taking the next step in the recommendation (post here).
Thanks as always for the great software you maintain. Despite the sound of the first paragraph, I am very happy with my use of fink.
See the quoted material below for specific output.
