The ones you've listed are more than just window managers--they're desktop environments, which means thay include some additional features that you don't get from just a window manager--like application launchers and stuff like that. A major reason is historical: before Apple's X11 came out most everybody used the XDarwin display server and XFree86. XDarwin.app doesn't have an analogue to the X11.app applications launcher, so it's less friendly to use if you're using a minimal window manager. Also, it's nice not to have to switch out of your X11 server if you're running an X11 application and need to do something else that can be done under X11. -- Alexander K.
