I'd suspect what happens is that packages that get installed from the
pre-made binary distribution work (via Rosetta), because they'll have
the binary-darwin-powerpc that dpkg is looking for, whereas packages
you build from source will not, since they'll be marked (correctly) as
having been built on an Intel box.
