checking for freetype-config... /usr/bin/freetype-config. Couldn't find the config.log for gtk since I don't know where to look. locate config.log listed:
/sw/src/cvs-proxy-1.11.5-1/cvs-1.11.5/config.log
/sw/src/gail17-1.4.1-1/gail-1.4.1/config.log
/sw/src/gnome-vfs2-ssl-2.4.2-7/gnome-vfs-2.4.2/config.log
/sw/src/gpdf-0.112.1-4/gpdf-0.112.1/config.log

(was actually more, but these are the files in /sw/)

How about quoting the line before this?

configure: error: Xft Pango backend found but did not find freetype
