If it refuses to build with gcc-4.0.1, you are out of luck on intel. The gcc-3.3 that comes with the system disk can only be used to compile ppc binaries, and even this only after jumping through several hoops.

You might want to ask the mplayer maintainer about this, not sure if he is reading this list.
