I'm seeing the same problem on my MacBook Pro. From some investigation that I did to day, it looks like the QT3 update is definitely the problem. The error message that appears in my log is "couldn't open fontconfigs desired file in Xft!!!" or something very close to that. I found descussions on the same problem only when talking about QT3 (even happening a couple of years ago). I certainly hope that the problem gets fixed quickly.
