I went ahead and removed /sw and re-installed fink. Everything is OK for now. Ignore this thread.

Just an update. I aborted this process and ran sudo fink selfupdate and chose the rsync method. This command was working fine until it called /sw/bin/apt-get-lockwait update
It appears to be hanging there:

I don't know what I did wrong. I was trying to get trac-2.4 up and running. Installing svn had some issues with db43 versus db43-ssl. I have svn up, but trying to re-index my package collection has been running for 2 days and I don't know why - there is no feedback from fink eve though I called it with the verbose option.
