After giving your recommendation a try, I believe the proper equivalent syntax is
sort -n -k 1,1 | awk '
The " ' " part is part of the remaining script.

That would be
sort -n -k 1,2 | awk
This has always worked. The alternative non-POSIX "sort +POS1 -POS2" was
dropped from gnu sort a couple of years ago.
