Well, nobody replied to my post, but maybe some other n00bs like me might what to know what I ended up doing--I just got the binary from OpenOffice.org and used that. It works great! In my frenzy of installing fink apps I forgot that you don't always have to compile everything, all the time. :)
But I am curious if any experts here have any ideas why it wouldn't compile . . . even if it is a moot point. Anyway, now that I got OOo running on my iBook and can save and open Word docs from all those poor souls out there still chained to MS, the only question that remains, for me, is how to get Visio docs (.vsd) opened in an open-source drawing program for editing. I gather that there has been a call for developers to create a Visio filter for OOo Draw, but that it will likely be a long while. Oh well . . .
