Thanks to both Alexander and Martin for their replies. :)

running "gcc_select" by itself is supposed to give you something like:

$ gcc_select
Current default compiler:
gcc version 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5367)

though the instructions probably should mention a value.

Since you're missing the exectuable, you need to try to reinstall the
DeveloperTools.pkg of Xcode.

If you do have /usr/sbin/gcc_select installed, then perhaps /usr/ sbin is not in your PATH environment variable?

gcc_select is just not there. Which is weird, since I have installed each XCode version and update, and previously have not had problems like this. :S

XCode tools said Dev Tools was a 0 byte upgrade, but I'm running it anyway. I also ticked gcc4 and gcc3.3 in case they have somehow gone missing as well.

<checks the install progress>

"Less than a minute..." appears to be a new Apple install variable covering anything under half an hour.

It's not as though I had been on one of my scorched-earth free-up- space-on-the-disk delete-or-die forays. With my MacBook's 120 GB HDD, I haven't needed to get the slasher out yet. (I mention this since when I do go deleting things, I tend to get a bit carried away and delete things the system to which the system is somewhat attached. Heh-heh-heh.)

"The software was successfully installed."

Apple hasn't heard of the present perfect tense, either, but let's check if our wandering lamb has returned...

Pearl:~ clytie$ gcc_select

Ha!

:D

Thanks, guys.

Now I'll try "fink selfupdate" again...
