Okay. Since you are already using fink's unstable tree, can you do a "fink
self-update; fink update-all" so that you compile the newest version of the
maxima package available in fink? It's possible that this is a bug which
has been corrected already. (fink's maxima is at 5.9.2-4)

Also, if you still have problems after this please give the output from:

$ maxima -uv

... and also tell us what operating system and machine type you are using.
