OK--I found this very problem in one of the list archives (fink-devel).  
The remedy which worked there was to remove the 
/sw/var/lib/fink/scanpackages.db file, (e.g. via 'sudo rm 
/sw/var/lib/fink/scanpackages.db').  Try that.
