"scanpackages" deals exclusively with local package archives, so changing the available trees shouldn't matter. You can try to disable the unstable tree again and see what happens, though. If you're still having problems then you might have to remove the database file: /sw/var/lib/fink/scanpackages.db -- Alexander K.
