well, `mutt' is quite good, once you've understood navigation/configuration
and have done the latter. no GUI, though. otherwise, why not simply use
Thunderbird (they have .dmg files lying around on their homepage)?  apart from
being big and ugly (as it should be as an offspring of mozilla :-)) it does it's
job quite nicely, spam-filtering and all. no crashes/no problems during some
years of usage.
