hi alexander,
no, the fink distro is on the system partition (/volumes/system/)
which has 1.48 GB left. not a lot i know but should be enough yes?.
the distro i downloaded was the one on the fink.org download page for
os x, the fink binary installer 0.81 for ppc os x (http://
www.finkproject.org/download/index.php?phpLang=en). i have in
my .bash_profile in my home drive the single line . /sw/bin/init.sh,
this file wasn't there at first so i had to create it (i had
a .bash_login instead, adding the line to that didn't seem to work).
these are all the steps i took, and everything was fine up until now,
fink installed ok and would otherwise run ok i guess ( i havn't tried
installing anything yet). i also tried to selfupdate-cvs in place of
rsync, but got the following error:

cvs login: authorization failed: server fink.cvs.sourceforge.net
rejected access to /cvsroot/fink for user anonymous
### execution of /usr/bin/su failed, exit code 1
Failed: Logging into the CVS server for anonymous read-only access
failed.

is there anything else you need? should i try un/re-installing fink?
how would i go about uninstalling? there doesn't seem to be a utility
which would do this, is just removing sw/ folder enough?

thanks again for your help,
leonard
