Fink had an update process for this transition put into place last
summer. We widely publicized the need to update fink installations.

But as usual, we rely on tools which are installed by Apple. In
Apple's 10.4.9 update, many months later, a change was made which
caused our (by then very old) update script to stop working.

So, while it is true that fink sometimes has trouble managing itself,
it is almost always for reasons beyond fink's control.

Sorry.
