Are you running the installer as a user with administrative privileges (i.e. the same user account you used before)?
Once you get Fink installed, try adding the following to your sources.list: deb file:/Users/js/www.finkproject.org/bindist 10.4/release main crypto deb file:/Users/js/www.finkproject.org/bindist 10.4/current main crypto in analogy with what Fink uses for access to its remote repository.
