Yes, I saw this too, and I think this needs to be publicly announced:

When running an up-to-date 10.4 Fink installation on Leopard,
one *must* do "fink reinstall fink" (or at least run the postinstall 
script) first, otherwise "fink selfupdate" will not update to 
fink-0.27.7-41 nor set the Distribution to 10.5.

One can quite happily (well, until one stumbles over the missing 
perl-5.8.6) run selfupdate and update-all without getting the new fink 
and the new Distribution.
