I have not had any success with either of these options as of yet. This seems to be a problem that can be blamed on Apple, so I'm hoping they will fix it soonish.
I can't duplicate this with any site, using both Leopard's curl 7.16.3 or fink's curl 7.17.1. All DNS lookups are virtually instantaneous. Perhaps there's an issue with your DNS servers?
