Thanks Alexander for the info, I followed your suggestion, that worked fine. All that I really want to do at this time is run "mtr" and I wasn't able to figure out any other way of getting it into my system, that is why I have used 'Fink". So the other part of my question is do I really have to have the X11 installed or can I just use 'Fink" as is for now, with the understanding that it will be command line only. I am sorry, (I know you have probably put in huge amount of hours to try an make this easily understood) but I am not really understanding how to load all this X11 stuff. So what I am doing now is running "apt-get -f install" to get back to a system in which I can run "mtr". Having said all this I am not really wanting to run any unstable programs at this time, so it isn't important to me to have this option.
