Hence my question about your X11 version. Another question is how you start the X (xterm I suppose?) window. On Leopard, the recommended version of X11 is the "offical" version that comes with the system (plus sofwareupdate), upgraded with the latest version, currently 2.1.4 from <http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz/wiki/Releases> This version tries hard to have a decent environment, including PATH, in xterm windows, without you having to do anything else than what you have for Fink already. In addition, I would recommend to run scilab from a Terminal.app window.
