I was using FinkCommander, and as I didn't find any boost packages, I 
checked the 'use unstable packages' option. then I also ran the File -> 
Update Table option, and then these boost libraries appeared. it seems 
this is not enough though.

I downloaded and installed Fink 0.8.1 Binary installper (Intel) from 
here: http://www.finkproject.org/download/index.php?phpLang=en

should I download something else?

ok, I'm running this now, seems to recompile loads of stuff. BTW, 
running this command from FinkCommander didn't work, because the command 
was asking questions (like which mirrors to use), but one coulnd't 
answer them in any way.

let's see what will be the result..
