Now that you point that out (blusing btw) ... after posting to the  
list, I had some recollection that updates to OSX often need to be  
followed by reinstallation of X11. A quick google produced this

I did a software update just this morning.

When I'm back at work, I'll reinstall X11 2.2.3.
