I am trying to install Fink (Fink-0.8.1-Intel-Installer.pkg) on an Intel Mac (MacBook) under Mac OS X 10.4.11.

When I tried to install to the hard disk Macintosh HD (111GB of which 87.2 GB are free), which was the default, I received the message:

"You cannot install Fink on this volume. Cannot perform symlink test on this volume because of a permissions problem. Try performing the "Repair Disk Permissions" function in Disk utility."

I suppose this means I should perform the "Repair Disk Permissions" on the Macintosh HD. I am somewhat leery of trying to change the Macintosh HD permissions or to repair disk permissions without knowing the ramifications.

On the other hand, when I try to use the Disk Utility on the Fink 0.8.1 file, I can verify it, but I can't access the "Repair Disk Permissions" function (it is grey colored).

I did not recognize any entries in your FAQ as addressing this problem.

I would appreciate any remarks anyone might offer.

Thank you,
Jim O'Reilly
