Thank you.  xfree and sane-backend-dev are installed.  Real Progress.

I'll start the other thread soon.  Here's the latest, trying the build
Daniel achieved above.

checking python2.3/Python.h usability... yes
checking python2.3/Python.h presence... yes
checking for python2.3/Python.h... yes
checking for sane_open in -lsane... yes
checking for pkg-config... no
checking for DBUS... configure: error: cannot find dbus-devel support: 
michael-tollefsons-power-mac-g5:~/desktop/hplip-2.8.7 mrt$ make

Fink Commander tells me dbus, dbus-dev and dbus-shlibs are current
and installed.  What am I missing now?
