Xcode is 2.4.1 by the look of it....

This may be.  But the downloaded distribution of fftw-3.1.2 does not  
need it.  Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to force it to make  
the FORTRAN interface.  It may depend on there being g77, but g77  
refuses to build (I have a nicely working Absoft FORTRAN compiler).
