I ran into this error (the error re ASM etc) while compiling MPlayer also. As a side note to the original poster - The macports.org MPlayer complies just fine, and I was able to run mencoder with all the features I'd hoped for. Just use the +xvid variant (read the faq re variants) and you're fine.
I have to say, as this was my first exposure to fink, I had a rather unpleasant one. The dependency tree for the mplayer package was massive, took like 4 hours to download and compile (420+ packages installed at last count, just for mplayer), and left me scratching my head looking for alternatives. If the fink mplayer package requires these libraries, why not inform the user? It was no where obvious to me, and I just gave up on it/fink because I needed a working mencoder.
