Any clues are appreciated.

This appeared on -users recently. Quoting my quote on that thread
"Check in the build directory (under /sw/src/fink.build) for ...
libxslt for a config.log file. That may contain information about
what command the configure scripts tried to run, and thereby indicate
the source of the failure."
It sounds like you may have a third party libxml somewhere--even if
not in /usr/local
