I think this one is a bug in the gnucash window management. The splash  
screen is a modal dialog. When some other dialog is supposed to appear  
during startup (there are 3 cases where that might occur), the second  
dialog is blocked by the splash screen, and you hang the launch process.

Start gnucash with:
gnucash --nofile

And then open your file or create a new one from the file menu.  
Generally, you won't have to start with the --nofile option, and  
gnucash will launch opening the datafile you had open when you quit  
the last session.
