The general idea has been to migrate all of the fink
packages to the newer gcc4X release as soon as possible
so folks install fresh installations of fink don't have
to compile two gcc4X packages. The gcc44-4.3.999-20090327
package was a pre-release of gcc44-4.4.0-1000 for the
benefit of x86_64 fink since gcc 4.4.0 is the first
release which supports a full multilib bootstrap
(64-bit and 32-bit) on x86_64-apple-darwin[91]*.
The new release has a few useful things for darwin
like the ability to statically link against libgfortran
with the -static-libgfortran flag. While you my have
to patch your code regarding vararg.h, gcc 4.4.0 has
some benefits like compile time error checks for
counter that will overrun the boundaries of arrays.
The gfortran polyhedron benchmarks are also significantly
improved (see my posting from March 28th in the fink-devel
mailing list archives).
