It means that you didn't type the right command. 

I don't know how it got ruined by the mailer, but I typed ".
/sw/bin/init.sh" in my message; or you can also use "source /sw/bin/init.sh"

If you have Fink installed, this should be done automatically, though. 
Try running

    cat $HOME/.profile

and see what shows up.   (you possibly don't have a .profile, however).
