Fink normally doesn't "leave stuff around", except when an error in the
post-install phase occurs.  However, in this case, nothing was actually
mis-built:  some files that were expected to be there were missing, and
the updates put those in place.

Tetex comes with an xdvi; and the "xdvi" package installs a different
variant; which one gets run by "xdvi" is set up by the package manager.

Why the built-in one works for me and not for you isn't completely
clear, but I'm glad you found a workaround
