I'm assuming you're on OS 10.6, since on 10.5 /usr/lib/libxml2.2.dylib
is only version 9.0.0 .

Can you post a full output transcript of an attempt to use fink, then,
so that we can see more context?

The behavior you're reporting essentially never happens unless
DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/sw/lib is set.
