Your pointers have been very helpful - thanks a lot. Whilst rebuilding
glibmm2.4 still left me with

/usr/libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin8/4.0.1/ld: warning can't open dynamic\
  library:
  /sw/src/fink.build/root-libsigc++2-2.2.4.2-2/sw/lib/libsigc-2.0.0.dylib\
  referenced from: /sw/lib/libcairomm-1.0.dylib (checking for undefined\
  symbols may be affected) (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

rebuilding cairomm1, then glibmm2.4 and finally pangomm1.4.1 did the trick.
Now, for the first time here, fluxbox-menu-editor compiles fine.
